Kitcheners win cup for the fourth time

KITCHENER Taverners have won the Suffolk Sunday Cup for the fourth time.

KITCHENER Taverners had to come from behind to win the Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Cup for a fourth time in seven years.

The Ipswich Sunday Football League side defeated holders Moreton Hall Ferals 2-1 in Sunday’s final on 'Suffolk Super Sunday' - four cup finals on one day - at Needham Market FC.

Substitute Charlie Hooley netted a 68th minute winner to seal their third success in this competition in the past four seasons, after they had trailed 1-0 at the interval.

After Ethan Clarke had rattled the Ferals’ crossbar in the 22nd minute, it was the Bury & District Sunday League side who went ahead after 38 minutes.

Jake Peasgood split the defence with a through ball and goalkeeper Josh Hender upended Charlie Glover. Hender got a hand to Peasgood’s penalty but could not keep it out.

The Ferals side came close to extending their lead in the 40th minute when Peasgood’s well-struck free-kick cannoned back off the far post.

Kitcheners were level five minutes after the restart when Asa Millard’s free-kick took a big deflection off the wall, wrongfooting keeper Aston Fallows and nestling in the bottom far corner of the net.

Ethan Clarke got clear of the Ferals’ defence almost immediately afterwards, but shot tamely across the face of goal and then Fallows made a fine save from Gavin Van Oene.

But the goal that the Ipswich-based side had been threatening arrived in the 68th minute when a low cross from the right reached Hooley, who had only been on the pitch a few minutes, beyond the far post and he sidefooted powerfully home from a tight angle.

Ferals had a couple of chances late on to equalise, but Kieran Waller’s close-range effort was saved by Hender before Ben Newdick volleyed wide following James Buckmaster’s free-kick.

The cup and medals were presented by Alice Barton and Alice Libert-Simons from competition sponsors Best Badges.
