A First Vets' Cup for Ransomes Sports

RANSOMES Sports netted four second-half goals as they lifted the Suffolk Veterans Cup.

RANSOMES Sports netted four second-half goals as they lifted the Best Badges Suffolk Veterans' Cup for the first time.

They defeated fellow Norfolk & Suffolk Veterans’ League Division One South side Whitton Colts 5-1 at Needham Market FC in Sunday’s final.

Ransomes Sports led 1-0 at the interval courtesy of Danny Allen’s smart near-post header from Danny Thrower’s left-wing free-kick in a bad tempered first-half.

Kris Rose almost drew Whitton Colts level in the eighth and last minute of time added on, but goalkeeper Adam Bond parried away his well-struck shot.

The second period was more of a spectacle as Ransomes Sports turned the screw after Allen netted from the rebound after goalkeeper Adam Wilson slipped attempting to save a 47th minute shot.

Whitton Colts rallied as Bond saved from Danny Cunningham and then substitute James Crooks shot wide from close range before Ransomes Sports netted three goals in the space of just 12 minutes.

Skipper Joe Francis supplied a lovely finish with a low left-foot shot into the bottom far corner of the net in the 73rd minute.

It was 4-0 a minute later when substitute Mo Fike rolled the ball into an empty net after Wilson raced out of his penalty area and missed his kick.

Karl Goodwin then set up Francis to round the keeper and tap home in the 85th minute, before Kris Rose finished well to score a consolation goal for Whitton Colts a minute later.

Ransomes Sports will be aiming to complete a league and cup double when they meet Whitton Colts, who lead the table by one point, in their final match of the season next Sunday.

The cup and medals were presented by Richard Maydell from competition sponsors Best Badges.
