AFC Sudbury have ended Whitton United’s stranglehold on the Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup.

The Yellow won Sunday’s third round tie 3-0 at the MEL Group Stadium to bring to an end the visitors’ dominance of the competition.

Whitton United had won the cup in each of the past four seasons and had not lost since a 3-1 defeat to Woodbridge Town in the quarter-finals of the competition in the 2017-18 season.

The match was the only one of the six scheduled third-round ties and one second-round tie to go ahead on Sunday due to the freezing weather conditions.

Indeed, only four of 24 planned matches went ahead across the weekend – and one of those was abandoned.

The solitary McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup Second Round tie played on Saturday between Kirton Athletic Reserves and Unity was cut short after 40 minutes due to a player injury. Only two of the six planned second-round matches in the Portable Space Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup went ahead on Saturday.

Both matches resulted in away wins – Claydon Reserves won 4-1 at East Bergholt United Reserves and Ransomes Sports Reserves were 5-1 winners at Westerfield United Reserves.

All ten first-round Suffolk Boys’ Plate matches were postponed.
