Trimley Red Devils make cup history

TRIMLEY Red Devils have reached the final of the Suffolk Junior Cup for the first time.

TRIMLEY Red Devils have made history by reaching the final of the Suffolk Junior Cup for the first time.

Two goals by David Gibson inside the opening 20 minutes settled the outcome of their semi-final 2-0 against Bacton United 89 on Saturday. Gibson (red shirt) is pictured above scoring his first goal.

The holders who, like Trimley Red Devils, play in Division One of the Touchline SIL, were unable to find a reply and so it is Trimley who will be off to Portman Road for the final.

The match was scheduled to take place at Woodbridge Town FC, but with the Notcutts Park pitch under water, it was switched on Saturday morning.

Felixstowe & Walton United FC, whose own first-team fixture at Ely City was postponed, offered their pitch and summoned up enough volunteers to host the tie at short notice and were rewarded with a crowd of close on 150.

Unfortunately, Saturday’s other semi-final between Brandon Town and AFC Kesgrave once again fell foul of the weather.

The tie has been rescheduled for this coming Saturday, April 7th, against at Cornard United FC, with a 2.30pm kick-off.

Felixstowe & Walton United, the first winners of the Days Sports Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup in 2007, are through to the final of this season’s competition.

The Seasiders defeated fellow Thurlow Nunn Reserve League side Haverhill Rovers 3-1 at Ransomes Sports Ground in Ipswich to reach the final for the first time since winning the competition in its inaugural season.

Gym United may have reached the FA Sunday Cup Final, but they will not be playing in this season’s Suffolk Sunday Cup Final.

Kitchener Taverners won 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in their re-arranged semi-final tie at AFC Sudbury on Sunday afternoon.

The Ipswich-based side, who lost 6-4 to Gym United in the Suffolk Sunday Cup Final in 2014, gained some measure of revenge with their shoot-out success.

They will now meet Mellis, last season’s runners-up, in this season’s final.

Meanwhile, Monday night's Suffolk Boys' Under-18 Midweek Cup Quarter-Final between Bury Town and Felixstowe & Walton United FC has been switched from Ram Meadow to the Goldstar Ground.
