Clubs both aim for two semi-finalists

TWO clubs are bidding to have two teams in the Suffolk Women’s Cup Semi-Finals.

TWO clubs are bidding to have two teams in the semi-finals of this season’s MH Goals Suffolk Women’s Cup.

AFC Sudbury Reserves face Needham Market, the holders, in the first of two matches taking place at the MEL Group Stadium on Sunday.

That match kicks-off at 12 noon and will be followed by the AFC Sudbury first team taking on Woodbridge Town at 2pm.

The Woodpeckers’ second-round tie away to Bungay Town Ladies was abandoned with the visitors winning 1-0.

Beccles subsequently withdrew from the competition, meaning Woodbridge now travel to the 2021-22 winners in the last eight.

AFC Sudbury Reserves lost 5-0 to Needham Market at the semi-final stage two years ago, and the visitors will be looking to move within one match of a fourth consecutive final appearance.

Needham Market’s Development side are also on the road, albeit making the short journey to meet Stowupland Falcons, who sit second in the SGWFL Premiership, whereas their visitors are fifth.

The other tie sees Brantham Athletic host Halesworth Town.

Brantham, who top the Suffolk Girls’ & Women’s League Premiership with five wins in their eight games so far, will be favourites to progress past Halesworth, who sit seventh in the SGWFL Championship table.

It’s also Matchday 3 on Sunday in the Videndum Suffolk Girls’ Under-16 Cup, with two matches in Group B Eastern and one in Group A Western.

There’s just one tie on Saturday as Unity host Boxford Rovers in the third round of the McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup.

Unity were comprehensive 6-0 winners at Achilles Reserves in the second round earlier this month, while Boxford progressed past Bacton United 89 Reserves in a penalty shoot-out last Saturday.

A place in the quarter-final of this season’s competition awaits the winners.
