Cavendish reach Primary Cup Final

CAVENDISH are through to a third Suffolk Primary Cup Final.

MANAGER Liam Cawtheray said it was an ‘unbelievable feeling’ after his Cavendish side reached this season’s McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup Final.

The Essex & Suffolk Border League Division Two side overcame Ipswich Vale Exiles 2-1 in Saturday’s semi-final at Blackhouse Lane, home of Cornard United FC.

They will now face Redgrave Rangers in the final at Colchester United on Tuesday, April 30th.

It is the third time that Cavendish have reached the final of this competition, losing 2-0 to Waveney Wanderers in the 1979-80 season, before lifting the trophy thanks to a 3-2 victory over East Bergholt United in the 1984-85 campaign.

The Dishmen took control of their semi-final against their Macron SIL Division Six opponents with two first-half goals.

Haydn Taylor put them ahead mid-way through the first-half, slotting home past the keeper following a defensive error.

Lloyd Finch then added the second around ten minutes later, smashing home following a through ball.

Although Ipswich Vale Exiles pulled a goal back early in the second period, Cavendish had further opportunities to wrap the tie up without taking them.

Cawtheray said: “It would have been nice to have got a third goal before half-time, but at 2-0 there is always a chance that they will get the next goal, which they did.

“After they scored they had their tails up and they hit the post, although we had three or four glorious chances to score but didn’t take them and we were thankful to get through in the end.”

Cawtheray said it was more a feeling of relief at the final whistle, and it didn’t sink in until later on that that they had reached the final.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to reach the final. Everyone wanted to get to the final as we have had a frustrating season in the league.

“We have been hit and miss - we have been superb or dreadful!  We have beaten the teams at the top of the league and dropped points to those at the bottom,” he added.

Three sides from Waveney reached county cup semi-finals after winning their semi-finals on Sunday.

Waveney Lionesses defeated Kesgrave Kestrels 2-0 in the Videndum Suffolk Girls Under-12 Cup and Saxmundham Sports 6-0 in the Videndum Suffolk Girls Under-13 Cup.

Meanwhile Waveney Tigers were 6-2 winners versus Kirkley & Pakefield Knights in the Suffolk Mixed U16 Plate Semi-Final. That result prevented an all-Kirkley & Pakefield final as the Royals won 2-1 at Cornard Dynamos Red.

The Youth Cup Finals will take place at The New Croft in Haverhill on Sunday, May 12th.
