Shoot-out win for Primary Cup holders

HOLDERS Coddenham Athletic required penalties to progress in the Suffolk Primary Cup.

HOLDERS Coddenham Athletic required penalties to progress in the first round of this season’s McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup.

They edged past Sporting 87 ‘A’ 5-4 on spot kicks following a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

That was the only one of Saturday’s rescheduled ties that went to a shoot-out on what was a good day for teams drawn away – seven of the ten matches being won by the visitors.

Grundisburgh Reserves won 4-1 at Carlton Colville Development and Occold also returned triumphant from the Lowestoft area after a 3-1 victory over FC Waveney.

Hadleigh Brettsiders were 4-2 winners at Framlingham Town ‘A’ and Ipswich Vale Exiles put out Assington Stanley 2-1.

Bramford United, who lifted the cup in the 2020-21 season, won 3-2 at Capel Plough Reserves and Thurston Reserves were victorious 2-0 at Samuels.

The biggest winners of the day were Bacton United Reserves, who beat Mendlesham 8-2.

The other home teams to reach round two were Redgrave Rangers, who won 4-1 versus AFC Kesgrave Reserves, and Haverhill Town, 1-0 winners against Somersham Reserves.

The draw for the second round will be announced on the Suffolk FA website and social media at 5pm on Monday.

There was one tie in the second round of the Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup and it was Claydon Reserves who emerged winners 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Wanderers Under-23s.

There are a further six ties in the competition set for this Saturday, with Framlingham Town U23s facing Brantham Athletic U23s in the remaining tie on Tuesday, November 7th.

Meanwhile, the Veo Suffolk U18 Midweek Cup Second Round match between Framlingham Town and AFC Sudbury, which was postponed last Tuesday, has been re-arranged for Tuesday, November 14th, kick-off 7.45pm.

There is only one midweek county cup fixture – the second-round tie in the Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup between Long Melford and Needham Market.

Wednesday’s match is a repeat of last season’s quarter-final meeting at Bloomfields which Needham Market won 3-1 en route to lifting the cup for a third successive season.

That was after Step 5 side Long Melford had taken the lead against their Step 3 hosts, and the Villagers will be looking to once again raise their game against the holders.

Long Melford currently sit second bottom of the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division while Needham are second top of the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central.
