Hope Church upset Gnats in Primary Cup

EXACTLY half of Saturday’s Suffolk Primary Cup ties went ahead after Friday’s flooding.

HOPE Church knocked out last season’s losing finalists Gipping Gnats in the first round of this season’s McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup on Saturday.

Gipping Gnats lost 2-1 at their Macron SIL Division Four opponents, who play a league below them, in one of ten ties that survived the weather.

AFC Oulton Reserves had an impressive 8-2 win at Elmswell Reserves, while Cavendish saw off Lakenheath Casuals 7-3.

Benhall St Mary and Laxfield both enjoyed 6-1 home victories versus Wenhaston United Reserves and Stowupland Falcons ‘A’ respectively.

Hopton & Hawthorn United went through 7-6 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Oulton United, while Kesgrave Kestrels Reserves edged Normanston Magpies 4-3. Jay Seeley-Hanson (partly hidden) scores the decisive penalty kick on the hour mark. Photograph: Ian Smillie

The ten ties that were called off will now take place this coming Saturday afternoon.

In the only match scheduled on Sunday, Stoke by Clare were 8-1 winners at Foxhall United in the outstanding Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Shield Second Round to set up a quarter-final tie away to Taverners.

Six of last week’s eight scheduled Veo Under-18 Midweek Cup First Round ties went ahead, with wins for five of the home teams. The only side to buck that trend were Needham Market, last season’s runners-up, who won 6-3 at Kirkley & Pakfield AFC Royals.

Lowestoft Town also hit their opponents for six, winning 6-0 against Sporting 87.

Framlingham Town are set to host holders AFC Sudbury on Tuesday, with the Stowmarket Town v Hadleigh United and Ipswich Wanderers v Cornard United ties now earmarked for Thursday, November 9th.
