Thurston score late Junior Cup winner

THURSTON ended Mutford & Wrentham’s dream of winning the Suffolk Junior Cup.

THURSTON ended Mutford & Wrentham’s dream of winning this season’s Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup.

A late goal gave the Macron SIL Division One leaders a 2-1 victory in Saturday’s third round tie and so ended the possibility of the Anglian Combination Division Two side reaching a fourth successive final.

Mutford & Wrentham, who defeated Thurston 4-3 in last season’s semi-final, had been aiming to go one better and lift the trophy after finishing runners-up in each of the last three years.

That was the only one of eight ties settled by the odd goal on a day when there were 44 goals in just eight matches at an average of 5.5 goals per game!

SIL Division Two side Kirton Athletic beat Bacton United 89 of Division One 6-4, while Achilles were 6-1 winners against Carlton Colville Town.

Two teams netted five goals – Grundisburgh beat Beccles Caxton 5-0 and Somersham saw off Great Blakenham Chequers 5-1.

Woolverstone United won 3-1 at home to holders AFC Kesgrave to end their grip on the trophy, but the other Kesgrave side, Kesgrave Kestrels, returned from AFC Oulton 4-1 winners.

McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup holders Coddenham Athletic progressed 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Brantham Athletic ‘A’ on Saturday.

They have now won both their matches in this season’s competition as a result of shoot-outs and will now visit Kesgrave Kestrels Reserves in round three.

Joining them in the last 16 of this season’s competition are Ipswich Vale Exiles, who were 5-1 winners at Hadleigh United Brettsiders and will now face Coplestonians Development.

It’s now down to the last 16 of the Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup following the completion of Sunday’s second round.

Lowestoft Town won 4-1 at ETC Lowestoft and BOCA Norman Warriors emerged 5-3 victors versus Waveney Athletic in their north Suffolk derby.

Bury Town were the biggest winners, defeating Kedington 13-0, Old Newton United put six past Somersham without reply and Wanderers won 5-0 at Revolution in the Ipswich derby.

Two of Thursday’s Veo Suffolk Under-18 Midweek Cup ties were settled on penalties.

Ipswich Town Under-16s won 4-2 in the shoot-out after a goalless draw at Brantham Athletic, while Walsham-le-Willows progressed 5-4 on spot kicks after a 1-1 draw with last season’s runners-up Needham Market.

The draws for the next rounds of the competitions will all be announced later this week.

There is just one midweek county cup fixture as Stowmarket Town U23s host Woodbridge Town U23s in their delayed Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup on Tuesday evening.
