Achilles aiming for county cup success

ACHILLES will be aiming to take another step towards Suffolk county cup success on Saturday.

ACHILLES will be aiming to take another step towards Suffolk county cup success on Saturday.

The Ipswich-based side won the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup twice in three seasons, before their relegation from Senior football.

The Macron SIL Division One side lifted the Senior Cup in both the 2016-17 and 2018-19 seasons.

Achilles are struggling in the league this season, winning just two of their nine matches so far, but Carlton Colville Town, who are their Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup Third Round opponents on Saturday, are also finding it tough going.

They have yet to win any of their six fixtures to date in Division Four of the Fosters Solicitors Anglian Combination. Achilles (red & black striped shirts) are pictured above in action against Capel Plough (black & blue striped shirts) in Division One of the SIL.

Two sides who are bang in form are Mutford & Wrentham and Thurston, who face each other on Saturday in a repeat of last season’s semi-final.

Mutford & Wrentham currently sit top of Division Two of the Anglian Combination, with seven wins from their nine matches, while eight wins in ten matches means Thurston lead the way in SIL Division One.

Somersham, who are second in the same division, will be bidding to avoid a banana skin as mid-table Division Two Great Blakenham Chequers are their visitors.

Kirton Athletic, who are going well in second spot in Division Two, will be aiming to upset the 2016-17 winner Bacton United 89.

SIL Division One side Grundisburgh, like Achilles former winners of the Suffolk Senior Cup, will be hoping to progress just like their Reserve side did in the McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup last weekend. They host Anglian Combination Division Two side Beccles Caxton.

There are also two rescheduled matches postponed from last Saturday's McDonald's Suffolk Primary Cup Second Round.

Thirteen second-round matches in this season’s Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup are due to take place on Sunday afternoon.

Since the draw was made AFC Sudbury, Stoke By Nayland and Whitton United, who won the competition four years in a row from 2018-19 until 2021-22, have all withdrawn from the competition.

That means Bury Town Reserves, Coplestonians Reserves and Ransomes Sports Reserves are already through to the third round, but who will join them?

There’s a derby on the north Suffolk coast as ETC Lowestoft entertain Lowestoft Town, who were runners-up in the 2021-22 final.

Trimley Sports & Social Club host the holders Woodbridge Town in another of several local derbies.

Bury Town and Haverhill Rovers are through to the last eight of this season’s Veo Suffolk Under-18 Midweek Cup after wins on Monday evening.

Waveney were put to the sword at Bury Town, losing 10-0, while Rover beat Borough 2-1 in the Haverhill derby.

A further five second-round ties plus the outstanding first-round match are scheduled to take place on Thursday evening.
