Clubs aiming to close in on final

SIX sides yet to win the Suffolk Senior Cup are involved in Saturday’s quarter-finals.

SIX sides yet to win the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup are involved in Saturday’s quarter-finals.

Five of those sides – AFC Sudbury Reserves, Claydon, Halesworth Town, Henley Athletic and Haverhill Borough – will be bidding to move to within one win of a first-ever appearance in the showpiece final.

Framlingham Town, the sixth, were runners-up in the 1995-96 season when they lost 3-0 to Grundisburgh in their only previous final appearance.

The Castlemen, who are currently in the play-off places in Division One North of the Thurlow Nunn League, host high-flying Henley Athletic.

Henley sit top of the Macron SIL Senior Division and reached the Morrison Freight Cup Semi-finals thanks to a 4-2 win at Ransomes Sports last Saturday.

Ransomes Sports, who as Ransomes won the Senior Cup in both the 1978-79 and 1980-81 seasons, host AFC Sudbury Reserves, who were undefeated in 13 Thurlow Nunn League Division One North fixtures before losing 4-1 at home to Harwich & Parkeston on Tuesday evening. The last team to beat AFC Sudbury Reserves prior to Tuesday were Haverhill Borough back in mid-November. Borough, losing semi-finalists in this competition in the 2016-17 season, travel to another SIL side, Halesworth Town.

Currently occupying fourth position in the Senior Division, Halesworth would go top if they were to win their six matches in hand on leaders Henley.

The fourth SIL Senior Division side in the last eight are Claydon, who travel to 2008-09 winners Beccles Town, who sit fourth in the Foster Solicitors Anglian Combination League Premier Division.

The draw for the semi-finals will be announced on Thursday.

On Sunday it’s the quarter-finals of four Girls’ county cup competitions at U12, U13, U14 & U16 levels.
