Taking part in outdoor sports such as football is important for our health and wellness, but so is being adequately sun protected.

Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in the UK.

The good news is that this is all mainly preventable, with adequate sun protection.

If you enjoy outdoor sport, good sun protection habits should be part of your health and safety routines.

Sunguarding Sport is a campaign for individuals, groups and clubs to help keep everyone sun safe.

Guidelines issued by Sunguarding Sport provide you with a better understanding of the facts, and how to mitigate the risks, preparing you for activity, whilst keeping you sun safe.

Suffolk FA Designated Safeguarding Officer Hayley Chart said: “Sun protection should be part of your normal football routine when UV levels are high.

“Just as you would wear shin pads to protect yourself from physical injury when playing football, sunscreen is just as important to protect your skin from long term and potentially life threatening damage.

“We hope all clubs get on board and support this vital campaign. No-one’s skin has built in sun protection, adults and children – don't take the risk, be sun safe.”
