Last-eight places on offer in county cups
CLUBS will be playing for quarter-final places in two county cup competitions this weekend.
Five ties are scheduled in the Portable Space Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup Second Round on Saturday.
Beccles Town Reserves became the first club to book their place in the last eight thanks to beating Long Melford Reserves 8-7 on penalties following a 1-1 draw last Saturday.
Ten other teams will be vying to join them in next month’s quarter-final line-up.
Seven of the ten sides in action on Saturday are from the Macron SIL along with Thurlow Nunn Reserve League duo Cornard United Reserves and Whitton United Reserves.
The other side are Bungay Town Reserves, who play in Division Five South of the Fosters Solicitors Anglian Combination League and are away to Halesworth Town Reserves.
The only other tie scheduled for Saturday sees Kirton Athletic Reserves and Unity face each other in their delayed second-round match in the McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup.
There are six ties in the Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup on Sunday afternoon, although the third round gets under way on Friday evening as Haverhill Rovers entertain Bury Town Reserves.
AFC Sudbury are the latest side tasked with ending Whitton United’s domination of the competition in recent seasons.
AFC Sudbury, who have so far beaten Bury Town (4-1) and Kesgrave Kestrels (11-1) in this season’s competition, will have home advantage on their 3G pitch.
There is also one second-round tie on Sunday – Stowupland Falcons and Ipswich Vale Exiles Res will try again after their meeting was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch last weekend.
On Sunday morning there are first-round matches in the four Suffolk Boys’ Plate competitions.
