Impressive wins for away teams in cup

THERE were some impressive away wins in the Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup on Saturday.

THERE were some impressive away wins in the Portable Space Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup First Round on Saturday.

Holders Walsham-le-Willows Reserves were 5-1 winners at Henley Athletic Reserves, while last season’s runners-up Stowmarket Town Reserves triumphed 6-2 at Framlingham Town Reserves.

Hadleigh United Reserves, the 2014-15 winners, won 5-0 at Brandon Town Reserves.

There were three-goal margin of victories for both Westerfield United Reserves (4-1 winners at Benhall St Mary Reserves) and Haughley United Reserves (3-0 at Wickham Market Reserves).

Long Melford Reserves, losing semi-finalists last season, edged out 2019-20 and 2020-21 winners Woodbridge Town 2-1.

There is one remaining first-round tie to be played on Tuesday evening when Whitton Utd Reserves host Leiston St Margaret Reserves.

The draw for the second round will be made before then on Tuesday lunchtime at 1pm.

The last remaining first-round match in this season's CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup saw East Bergholt United gain a modicum of revenge against Leiston Reserves, who beast them on penalties in last season's semi-final.

After a 2-2 draw it was East Bergholt United who came out on top in the penalty shoot-out, winning 5-4. They will now host Framlingham Town in round two.

AFC Sudbury’s victory over Brantham Athletic on Sunday has set up a repeat of last season’s final in the MH Goals Suffolk Women’s Cup.

The holders will travel to Needham Market, who they defeated 3-1 last season at Colchester United FC to win the cup for the second time.

In Sunday’s other remaining first-round tie Haverhill Rovers were comfortable winners against Ipswich Valley Rangers and will now be away to East Bergholt United.

Moreton Hall Ferals, losing finalists last season, were 12-1 winners against Bedricks Worth in the Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Cup Second Round the following day.

The draw for the quarter-finals will be announced on Tuesday lunchtime at 1pm.

Bacton United 89, who were last season’s Suffolk Sunday Trophy winners, won 5-0 at home to Crafted Athletic in round two of the Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Shield.

The quarter-final draw will be made on Wednesday lunchtime at 1pm.

There were goals galore in the second round of the Best Badges Suffolk Sunday Trophy – 13 of them coming in one tie as West Suffolk Wolves overcame Haverhill Town 8-5.

Three teams scored seven times – Dragonfly (7-1 at home to Brett Vale), Shotley Rose (7-1 at Wincanton) and Thetford Wanderers (7-0 at Thurston).

The third-round draw will be announced on Friday lunchtime at 1pm.
