TWO Macron SIL sides had impressive victories in the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup against higher-league opposition.

Cornard United, the 2018-19 runners-up, came a cropper when they went down 4-0 at Ransomes Sports in Saturday’s first round.

The Ards, who had only lost one of their eight league games so far this season and are fourth in Division One North of the Thurlow Nunn League, were well beaten by a Ransomes Sports side who have won all four of their league games so far.

Fellow SIL Senior Division side Leiston St Margarets, who had only won one of their six league games, defeated Debenham LC 3-0.

It was a memorable first appearance in the competition for Sporting 87, who defeated Trimley Red Devils 5-1 to book their place in round two. Three ties went to penalties – two of them after 3-3 draws. Sudbury Sports and Wickham Market shared six goals on Friday night, with Sudbury Sports coming back from 3-0 down to level the tie, before the SIL side edged through 5-4 in the shoot-out.

The scoreline was the same in the tie between Coplestonians, the 2019-20 losing finalists, and Henley Athletic, who won also 5-4 in the shoot-out.

Haverhill Borough and Brantham Athletic Reserves ended 1-1, with Borough progressing 4-3 on penalties.

The draw for the second round will be made during Final Whistle on BBC Radio Suffolk on Saturday between 5.30pm and 6pm.

There were some high-scoring games in the first round of the Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup on Sunday.

Two games produced 11 goals each – holders Whitton United winning 8-3 against Spexhall Huntsman & Hounds, while Mildenhall Town won 7-4 away to West Gate Elks.

Two other games featured nine goals – Bury Town Reserves beat Eye Saints Youth 6-3 and Foxhall Town scored nine without reply at Stoke By Nayland.

Woodbridge Town, who had featured in seven successive finals up until last season, required a 4-1 penalty shoot-out win to oust Coplestonians Reserves following a 3-3 draw.

The draw for the second round will be announced via the Suffolk FA website and Twitter feed at 1pm on Thursday.
