MUTFORD & Wrentham have their eyes on a possible league and cup double this season.

The north Suffolk club won promotion from Division Four of the Fosters Solicitors Anglian Combination, after going the entire campaign unbeaten.

They will be bidding to complete the double when they face Stowupland Falcons in the Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup Final on Saturday.

Mutford & Wrentham topped the Division Four table with 58 points after winning 18 and drawing just four of their 22 league fixtures.

The club are not sure if this has been achieved before in the Anglian Combination, but club secretary Rob McMaster said: “We are supremely proud of the team for accomplishing this.

“It’s an unbelievable accolade for our team, especially in a league with some fantastic footballers.”

Paul Rose, who is first-team manager and club chairman, echoed his sentiments when he said: “It’s absolutely incredible what we’ve achieved as a team and club.

“Winning the league and promotion is fantastic – we’ve been very disciplined and prepared every week for some great teams.”

Club official Aaron Mills outlined what he felt had been the difference between this season and previous years.

“Personally, I think the mentality in the team has been the difference this season. We’ve made some fantastic additions to the squad which perfectly complement our playing style and the core players that continued with us for another season.

“Like other seasons, we always enter a game weekend with the belief we can pull the results and this season was no different, the team really wanted to achieve the unachievable and now we have! We now pursue the chance of securing the double.”

Club captain Ryan Grimmer explained how excited the are club by the prospect of playing in a higher league next season.

He said: “The team and all involved are really looking forward at the opportunity of playing in a higher division. This is something that the lads have always wanted.

“Certain factors over the last two years haven’t helped with no promotions for any clubs but we dug deep, stuck at it and ultimately the reward has now come. We can’t wait to get next season started!”

A last-minute winner saw Mutford & Wrentham lose 2-1 to Stowupland Falcons in last season’s Suffolk Junior Cup Final at The New Croft in Haverhill.

They have the chance to erase the memory of that defeat in this season’s final against the same opponents at the Jobserve Community Stadium in Colchester on Saturday, kick-off 5pm.

Manager Paul Rose added: “A special thanks goes to all involved this season, from the first team players to the backroom staff that don’t often get the recognition they deserve! It’s been a great season and we now push on to the Junior Cup Final.”
