Old Newton one win from first cup final

OLD Newton United are one win away from a first Suffolk Senior Cup Final appearance.

OLD Newton United are just one win away from a first CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup Final appearance.

The Macron SIL Senior Division side won 3-2 away to AFC Sudbury Reserves in the quarter-finals on Saturday to reach the final four.

The village side will be the sole representatives of the SIL in the semi-final draw, which will be announced during BBC Radio Suffolk’s Non-League Hour on this week’s Thursday Night Sports Social.

Thurlow Nunn League Division One South side Ipswich Wanderers had already ensured their place in the last four the previous weekend.

They are joined by Division One North sides Leiston Reserves and Needham Market Reserves.

Leiston Reserves beat Beccles Town of the Anglian Combination Premier Division 3-1.

Needham Market Reserves, meanwhile, went through 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw with East Bergholt United of the SIL. Needham Market (red shirts) are pictured defending a corner against East Bergholt United (green shirts) at Bloomfields. Photograph: Paul Voller.

Neither Leiston Reserves nor Needham Market Reserves have appeared in a Suffolk Senior Cup Final before, meaning one side to not have previously reached the final is guaranteed to do so this season.

The Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup is down to the last eight teams following Sunday’s third-round ties.

Holders Whitton United led the way, hitting double figures as they overcome Waveney, while Woodbridge Town were also comfortable winners against Spexhall Huntsman & Hounds.

Walsham-le-Willows won a penalty shoot-out 5-4 against Cornard United, while Capel Plough and Occold overcame Bury Town and Hadleigh United respectively by the same 2-1 scoreline.

AFC Kesgrave had a 3-1 victory over Ipswich Revolution to reach the quarter-finals, where both Coplestonians and Lowestoft Town await after their opponents withdrew.

The quarter-final draw will also be announced during BBC Radio Suffolk’s Non-League Hour on this week’s Thursday Night Sports Social.
