Six SIL sides chase semi-final berths

SIX SIL sides are vying for four semi-final spots in the Suffolk Junior Cup.

SIX Macron SIL sides will be vying for four semi-final spots in the Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup on Saturday.

There are two all-SIL Division One ties – Sporting 87 v Tattingstone United and Stowupland Falcons v Wickham Market.

Sporting 87 currently top the table and will be bidding to emulate last season’s feat of reaching the final four, but fifth-placed Tattingstone will provide potentially tough opposition.

It was Stowupland Falcons who knocked out Sporting 87 at the semi-final stage last season before going on to lift the cup.

They currently occupy eighth position in the table and are going to have to draw on their cup fighting exploits once more if they are to progress past a Wickham Market side who are second. The two remaining SIL sides in this season’s competition are both riding high in Division Two.

Cockfield United, who are second and have won 13 of their 16 league games this season, travel to last season’s runners-up, Mutford & Wrentham.

Their hosts sit top of Fosters Solicitors Anglian Combination Division Four, with 15 wins and one draw from their 16 matches.

The fourth and final tie sees Melton United, who are fourth in Division Two, travel to Cavendish, who are 11th in Division One of the Essex & Suffolk Border League.

Melton United lifted the McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup two years ago so will be looking to draw on that experience to move a step closer to another county cup final.

The draw for the semi-finals will be broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk’s Non-League Hour next Thursday between 8pm and 9pm.

On Sunday it’s the quarter-finals of three of the four men’s Sunday county cup competitions.

Moreton hall Ferals are already assured of their spot in the final four of the Suffolk Sunday Cup following the withdrawal of scheduled opponents Pauls.

Four of the six sides in action – AFC Bergholt, Borussia Martlesham, Elmsett United and holders Kitchener Taverners – are from the Ipswich Sunday Football League, so they are guaranteed at least one club in the last four.

Bury & District Sunday League side Barrow host Borussia Martlesham, with both sides sitting second in their respect leagues, while AFC Bergholt will be favourites to beat BDSL visitors Howards, who are without a win in their nine league games this season.

Laxfield will be waiting with interest to see who will join them in the semi-finals of this season’s Veo Suffolk Sunday Shield, holders Hardy having withdrawn from the competition.

Gainsborough United, the side Hardy defeated in last season’s final, travel across county to take on Moreton Hall 96.

Division One side Leiston Orient host Westbourne Warriors of Division Two in an all-ISFL tie, while Great Blakenham Chequers, second in ISML Division One, welcome South Norfolk Sunday League side Bungay Town.

There’s a full complement of quarter-final ties in the Suffolk Sunday Trophy.

After knocking out holders Wamil Wasps in the last round, Chantry Phoenix entertain Tollgate of BDSL Division Three, while ISFL sides Martlesham Old Boys and AFC Claydon face each other.

ISFL Division Four Cherrytree tackle Thurston from BDSL Division Four. The remaining tie pits Eye Saints against fellow BDSL Division Three outfit Bacton United.

The semi-finals draws for all three Sunday competitions will be broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk’s Non-League Hour next Thursday between 8pm and 9pm.
