TWO clubs are vying to reach their first Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup Final this weekend.
Neither Lakenheath Reserves nor Long Melford Reserves have previously featured in the final of the competition which was introduced for the 2006-07 season.
However, if one or both are to progress to this season’s final they are going to have to defeat clubs who boast five final appearances between them.
Lakenheath Reserves face Walsham-le-Willows Reserves in the first semi-final at AFC Sudbury on Friday evening, kick-off 8pm.
Lakenheath Reserves sit ninth in Senior B of the Kershaw Cambridgeshire County League, while Walsham-le-Willows Reserves are third in the Thurlow Nunn Reserve League.
Walsham-le-Willows have not only reached the final twice before but have then gone on to lift the trophy, winning 3-1 against Whitton United in the 2013-14 season and 3-0 versus Stowmarket Town in the 2018-19 campaign. Action is pictured above from that final as Stowmarket Town (old gold & black striped shirts) and Walsham-le-Willows (maroon shirts) compete for the ball at Bury Town FC.
That loss for Stowmarket was their second in consecutive seasons, after being beaten 2-0 by Felixstowe & Walton United the season before.
However, they also reached the final in the 2016-17 season, winning 2-1 against Woodbridge Town.
Stowmarket Town take on Long Melford in the second semi-final on Saturday afternoon at Claydon FC, kick-off 2.30pm.
Both teams play in the Thurlow Nunn Reserve League, with Long Melford Reserves currently occupying second place and Stowmarket Town Reserves in seventh place.
This season’s final is taking place at the Atalian Servest Stadium, home of Bury Town FC, on Saturday, May 14th, kick-off 2.30pm.
Both semi-final matches are all-ticket, with no cash entry on the day.
