A total of 56 goals were scored in just five first-round ties, with both Needham Market sides finding their shooting boots as they hit the net 27 times between them.

There were also big wins for AFC Sudbury Reserves, Bungay Town and Stowupland Falcons.

AFC Bergholt, last season’s losing finalists, are through to round two of the Suffolk Sunday Cup. They beat Playford 5-0, while the day’s other first-round fixture resulted in Occold edging out Bedricks Worth 3-2.

In the first round of the Veo Suffolk Sunday Shield six of the 12 ties played went to penalties, four of which were after 1-1 draws. One of those saw Lakenheath progress 6-5 on spot kicks against Prince of Wales.

Holders Hardy were comfortable 7-2 winners at home to Sizewell Argyle, while The Racing Centre fell at the first fence, losing 7-3 at home to Bardwell Sports.

There were 44 goals scored in the seven ties in the Suffolk Sunday Trophy. Wamil Wasps made a storming start to their defence of the competition with a 12-0 victory over Bury Boca Seniors.

The Suffolk Boys’ Under-18 Midweek Cup starts this week, with two first-round ties on Monday evening and six more on Thursday.
