Can cup magic rub off on club's sides?

TWO Sudbury sides will be hoping the magic of the cup rubs off on them.

TWO Sudbury sides will be hoping the magic of the cup rubs off on them this weekend.

AFC Sudbury drew a 2,000 crowd and a nationwide TV audience for their Emirates FA Cup First Round Proper tie versus Colchester United last Friday.

Now it’s the turn of AFC Sudbury Reserves and Sudbury Sports to see if they can emulate the club’s first team and embark on a strong cup run.

Both teams will be in action in the first round of the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup on Saturday afternoon against opponents from the Macron SIL.

AFC Sudbury Reserves will be at home to Westerfield United, while Sudbury Sports travel to Ipswich to face Coplestonians, the 2019-20 runners-up.

Sudbury Sports, who currently sit in 11th spot in the Essex & Suffolk Border League table, reached the final of the Suffolk Junior Cup only two seasons ago.

They lost in the final that night 6-4 to Halesworth Town, who are fourth in the SIL Senior Division and on Saturday travel to second-placed Henley Athletic.

Benhall St Mary beat Sudbury Sports 1-0 at this stage of the competition 12 months ago – and they are one of three other SIL sides to host Thurlow Nunn League opposition as Debenham LC visit.

East Bergholt United entertain Haverhill Borough and Leiston St Margarets welcome Ipswich Wanderers, one of last season’s losing semi-finalists.

Wanderers went down 2-0 to Bildeston Rangers, who start this season’s competition at home to Bungay Town, the 2017-18 runners-up. Framlingham Town were the other side to reach the last four of the 2020-21 competition, and they face fellow Thurlow Nunn League side Needham Market Reserves.

Leiston Reserves defeated Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves 6-2 on Wednesday evening to become the first team to book their place in the hat for the second-round draw which will be announced via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed at 3.30pm on Monday.

Saturday afternoon also sees the two remaining ties in the Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup and a further three in the Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup, including holders Woodbridge Town hosting Reserves Framlingham Town Reserves.

On Sunday attention turns to the third round of the Suffolk Sunday Trophy when seven matches are scheduled to take place.

The draw for the quarter-finals will be announced via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed at 3pm on Monday.
