AFC Bergholt bid to win first Sunday Cup

AFC Bergholt are looking to lift the Suffolk Sunday Cup for the first time.

AFC Bergholt are looking to lift the Rushmere Golf Club Suffolk Sunday Cup for the first time this weekend.

They face fellow Ipswich Sunday Football League Premier Division side Kitchener Taverners in Sunday’s final at The MEL Group Stadium, home of AFC Sudbury, kick-off 2pm.

AFC Bergholt were seventh in the ten-team table when the season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, while Kitchener Taverners sat in second spot behind Borussia Martlesham.

After a bye in the first round, AFC Bergholt beat last season’s runners-up Brandon Town Community 3-0, before seeing off Mellis 5-1 in the quarter-finals.

They secured their spot in the final thanks to a 2-0 victory over Bury & District Sunday League Premier Division side Moreton Hall Youth Ferals.

Kitchener Taverners were one of only six sides involved in the first round, where they defeated Pauls Athletic 7-0.

They required a shoot-out to oust Leiston Orient 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in round two, before disposing of Portman Rovers 5-1 at the quarter-final stage.

Kitchener Taverners then beat Borussia Martlesham 3-2 in their semi-final a fortnight ago to reach the final of this competition for the third time since its inaugural season in 1972-73.

They lost 6-4 to Gym United at Ipswich Wanderers FC in the 2013-14 final but got their hands on the cup in the 2017-18 season thanks to a 4-1 victory over Mellis, who suffered back-to-back final defeats as a result. Action is pictured above from that final between Kitchener Taverners (red shirts) and Mellis (blue shirts) at Needham Market FC.

The final will be followed by the HomeStore Self Storage Suffolk Women’s Cup Final between Ipswich Town and Needham Market, kick-off 5pm.
