Halesworth reach Junior Cup Final

HALESWORTH Town are through to their first Suffolk Junior Cup Final since the 1988-89 season.

HALESWORTH Town are through to their first Total Football Suffolk Junior Cup Final for more than 30 years.

The Macron SIL Senior Division side – they were awarded promotion from Division One after last season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic – defeated AFC YourShirts of SIL Division Two 4-0 at Notcutts Park, home of Woodbridge Town FC, in Wednesday night’s semi-final.

Halesworth have not appeared in a Suffolk Junior Cup Final since losing 1-0 to Walsham-le-Willows in the 1988-89 season and have only previously once won the competition.

That was way almost a century ago in the 1923-24 campaign, Halesworth winning 3-0 against Exning United in the final.

Their opponents in the delayed final of the 2019-20 competition will be Sudbury Sports, who had a thumping 9-0 victory over Bramford Road Old Boys.

The goals were shared around as seven different players got on the scoresheet for Sudbury Sports – there was also an own goal – in their tie at Brantham Leisure Centre, home to Brantham Athletic FC.

The young Sudbury Sports side, who are now playing in the Premier Division of the Essex & Suffolk Border League after winning promotion last term, will be competing in the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup this season.

A date and venue for the final will be announced in due course.

The last of the delayed 2019-20 county cup semi-finals takes place on Thursday night when Ipswich Exiles face Melton United in the McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup at Felixstowe & Walton United FC.

The winners will meet Elmswell, who defeated Leiston A 3-1 in their semi-final at Woodbridge Town FC on Monday night.
