Step 3 pair to meet in Premier Cup tie

THE draws for the first two rounds of the 2020-21 Suffolk Premier Cup have taken place.

TWO of the county’s Step 3 clubs will meet in the first round of this season’s Turners Hyundai Suffolk Premier Cup.

Needham Market, who are still involved in the semi-finals of the 2019-20 competition, will host 2017-18 and 2018-19 winners Leiston in the only first-round tie due to there being 17 entries.

The winners of that match will then be away in the second round to Bury Town, who are also involved in the final four of last season’s competition which has yet to be completed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The second round will also see a repeat of last season’s local derby between AFC Sudbury and Hadleigh United, which the lower-league Brettsiders won 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw. This time Hadleigh will have home advantage.

There will also be a re-match of the 2012 and 2018 clashes between Walsham-le-Willows and Ipswich Town.

The visitors fielded a strong side that won 5-1 at Summer Road soon after Mick McCarthy took over as manager in the first meeting and went through 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw two years ago.

The competition is again being sponsored by Turners Hyundai, whose Franchise Manager Nathan Ramsey is pictured above with the Premier Cup.
