Melton fall at first fence in Junior Cup

MELTON United have been knocked out of the Suffolk Junior Cup in the first round.

MELTON United were knocked out of the Total Football Suffolk Junior Cup just 11 days after becoming county cup champions.

Melton bowed out of competition at the first hurdle on Saturday, losing 4-3 on penalties to Bacton United 89 following a 2-2 draw.

That means they exited the competition just 11 days after winning the delayed 2019-20 McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup Final.

Elmswell, the team they defeated 4-3 in the final at Stowmarket Town FC, are through to the second round, after a 4-1 win at Somersham.

Both Melton United and Elmswell moved up to play in the 2020-21 Total Football Suffolk Junior Cup after winning promotion from Division Three of the Macron SIL at the end of last season.

One other tie was settled on spot kicks – Wenhaston United progressing 7-6 on penalties following a goalless draw at home to Ipswich Athletic.

The biggest winners of the day were Brandon Town, who won 9-0 at home to Walsham-le-Willows ‘A’, while AFC YourShirts defeated Grundisburgh 7-1.

That was the same scoreline in the sole first round tie played in the Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup as Walsham-le-Willows Reserves, the 2018-19 winners, saw off Capel Plough.

Two matches in the first round of the Suffolk Veterans’ Cup had to be abandoned due to players suffering broken legs.

The ties between Cornard United and AFC Hoxne and Suffolk Police and Aldeburgh Town were both abandoned after injuries to players from AFC Hoxne and Suffolk Police.

Both matches have already been re-scheduled for Sunday, October 25th.

One tie went all the way to a penalty shoot-out, with Waveney winning 5-4 following a 1-1 draw with Martlesham Old boys.

Two-time previous winners Bury Town were comfortable 5-0 victors at AFC Thurlow, but their reserve team lost 3-1 at Lakenheath Casuals.

One first-round match took place in the HomeStore Self Storage Suffolk Women’s Cup, in which Needham Market, the 2018-19 runners-up, defeated Chantry Grasshoppers 22-0.
