Tasty local derbies over festive period

SOME tasty local derbies are in store for Suffolk sides over the festive period.

SOME tasty local derbies are in store for Suffolk sides over the next few weeks, amongst a bumper programme of grassroots festive football.

Although league football has been suspended at Step 3 and Step 4 level, clubs at Step 5 and below will be in action either side of Christmas. With Ipswich Town away for much of the festive period, this is the perfect opportunity to support your local football club.

Stowmarket Town, the only Suffolk side still in this season’s Buildbase FA Vase competition, take on Norwich CBS in the third-round proper on Saturday.

In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division, Hadleigh United will host Whitton United on Saturday, before heading to Brantham Athletic on December 28th.

The bank holiday Monday also sees recently appointed Stowmarket Town manager Paul Musgrove take his side to Walsham-le-Willows, the club he graced for many seasons as a player.

And Woodbridge Town travel to Whitton United looking to avenge a 4-1 home loss just before Lockdown 2 began.

The New Year’s programme kicks-off on January 2nd with Long Melford and Mildenhall Town, who both chose to wait until then to play again, at home.

Stowmarket entertain Wroxham in a match that may prove vital in the race for promotion from the Premier Division come the end of the season.

Six Thurlow Nunn First Division North sides – AFC Sudbury Reserves, Cornard United, Haverhill Borough, Ipswich Wanderers, Lakenheath and Needham Market Reserves – face a busy festive period, each  playing three times over the festive period.

Wanderers and Lakenheath in particular, with games in hand on some of the teams in the top half of the table, will be hoping to improve their promotion prospects by the time the Christmas decorations come down.

It’s been quite a year already for Halesworth Town; promotion to the Senior Division of the Macron SIL was followed by the club lifting the Total Football Suffolk Junior Cup.

Halesworth will now be aiming to end 2020 as SIL Senior Division leaders – something which will be confirmed by a win at home to Henley Athletic on Saturday, December 19th.

Claydon, who saw their CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup dreams shattered by a last-gasp Haverhill Borough winner a fortnight ago, face Haughley United home and away either side of a trip to high-flyers Trimley Red Devils.

The only competitive match in the county on December 26th is the Anglian Combination Division One fixture involving Bungay Town, who are at home to Norwich United Under-21s, with an 11am kick-off.

Either side of that Beccles Town and Waveney are also in action.

Ipswich Town Women, fresh from their Vitality Women’s FA Cup victory at Harlow Town, are on the road at AFC Wimbledon on Sunday, December 20th looking to maintain top spot in the FA Women’s National League Division One South East.

They will return to Vitality Women’s FA Cup action when they travel to Billericay Town in the second-round proper on Sunday, January 3rd.

Needham Market Women and Haverhill Rovers Ladies and face-off in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Cup on Sunday and return to league duty on January 3rd along with AFC Sudbury.

The Lowestoft & District League have a full programme of fixtures scheduled for December 19th.

The Premier Logos Bury & District Sunday League, Ipswich Sunday Football League, and Norfolk & Suffolk Veterans League also have fixtures scheduled on December 20th and January 3rd.
