A busy weekend of county cup action
AFTER an almost blanket two-week break, a busy weekend of county cup action lies ahead.
The only fixture over the last fortnight saw Henley Athletic fight back from 3-1 down to defeat fellow Macron SIL Senior Division side Trimley Red Devils 4-3 in the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup.
Ross White (far right) is pictured turning away to celebrate after scoring Henley Athletic’s winner in injury time.
It was the second time in two rounds that Henley had trailed 3-1 before scoring three unanswered goals to progress in this season’s competition.
Ten more sides will this weekend be aiming to book their place in the quarter-finals, with the all-Thurlow Nunn League Division One clash between Ipswich Wanderers and AFC Sudbury Reserves on Friday having been postponed due to floodlight problems.
Four of the five ties on Saturday pit SIL sides against Thurlow Nunn League sides, with three of them having home advantage.
Arguably the tie of the round is Crane Sports at home to Lakenheath. Cranes have reeled off eight straight wins to lead the SIL, while Lakenheath sit third in Division One North of the Thurlow Nunn League.
Coplestonians (7th) and Old Newton United (4th) will be looking to overcome higher league Needham Market Reserves (8th) and last season’s runners-up Cornard United (10th) respectively.
Debenham Leisure Centre (5th) host Bourne Vale United (8th) in the remaining Thurlow Nunn League v SIL tie.
That just leaves the all-reserve clash between Kirkley & Pakefield and Leiston, which is a repeat of the meeting between the two sides at the same stage of last season’s competition, when Kirkley & Pakefield prevailed 2-1.
The draw for the quarter-finals will be filmed and announced on Saturday, November 23rd via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed simultaneously with being broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk.
There is one fixture in each of the Suffolk Sunday Cup, Shield and Trophy on Sunday along with the ten outstanding ties from the first round of the Suffolk Veterans’ Cup.
Heavy rain a month ago washed out these matches, which include former winners Bury Town and Woodbridge Town both playing at home, plus holders Whitton United, whose opponents Bramford Road Old Boys have conceded home advantage.
The draw for the second round of the Veterans’ Cup will be announced via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed at 5pm next Tuesday.
There are also second-round fixtures in four of the Crown Imperial Suffolk Boys’ Cups, which will be followed by the draws for the next rounds from Monday onwards.
The schedule for draws for next week is as follows:
Monday, 5pm: Boys’ Under-18 Sunday Cup Quarter-Final
Tuesday, 5pm: Veterans’ Cup Second Round
Wednesday, 12.30pm: Boys’ Under-12 Cup Quarter-Final; 5pm: Boys’ Under-13 Cup Quarter-Final and Plate First Round
