Primary Cup Final AFC Sudbury A Old Newton Utd Res May 2019 11

Primary Cup will take centre stage

THE second round of the Suffolk Primary Cup takes centre stage on Saturday.

FIFTY-SIX sides will be under starter’s orders for the second round of the McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup this weekend.

After the first round saw just three ties played, the vast majority of entrants will get their first taste of action in this season’s competition on Saturday.

The Suffolk Primary Cup traditionally attracts more entries than any other county cup competition, and this season is no different.

Who will follow in the footsteps of AFC Sudbury A and Old Newton United Reserves, last season’s finalists, is anyone’s guess at this stage of the competition, but the picture will become clearer on Saturday night.

Action is pictured above from last season’s final between AFC Sudbury A (red shirts) and Old Newton United Reserves (yellow shirts) which AFC Sudbury A won 4-2 at Portman Road.

The third-round draw will be announced via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed next Tuesday lunchtime at 12.30pm.

There is one outstanding second round tie in the Total Football Suffolk Junior Cup to be resolved on Saturday.

Wickham Market and Sudbury Sports Academy were locked at 2-2 when the match was abandoned due to an injury to the match official. The winners will be at home to Barham Athletic in the third round.

The second round of this season’s Suffolk Veterans’ Cup is taking place this weekend.

The tie between Bury Town and Black Boy is scheduled for Friday evening, kick-off 7.45pm, with the remaining ties starting at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.

Four former winners of the competition – Bury Town, Stowupland Falcons, Whitton United and Woodbridge Town – are among the 30 teams in action this weekend.

Whitton are, of course, the current holders and should progress at home to Ipswich Phoenix, while Woodbridge Town, the team they defeated 5-1 in last season’s final, take on Old Times.

The third-round draw will be announced via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed next Wednesday lunchtime at 12.30pm.
