Portman Road final looming on horizon

A PORTMAN Road final is just 180 minutes away in the Suffolk Primary Cup.

THE eight teams who remain in the Suffolk Primary Cup know they can all move within 90 minutes of a final appearance at Portman Road on Saturday.

Since they reached the quarter-finals a month ago, it has been confirmed that this season’s final will be staged at Portman Road for a second successive season. Spectators are pictured above enjoying last season's final.

For those involved it is an opportunity they will not wish to pass up, so there will be an extra edge to Saturday afternoon’s four ties.

Cavendish and Old Newton United Reserves both progressed to this stage courtesy of penalty shoot-outs, and will no doubt wish to avoid a repeat scenario with so much at stake.

Thurston visit Cavendish, while Old Newton United Reserves are on the road at Woolverstone United Reserves.

Bedricks Worth and Carlton Colville Town, who were both big winners in the fourth round, meet each other.

The fourth tie sees AFC Sudbury A make the long trek to Lowestoft to face FC Whitehorse.

The quarter-final line-up in this season’s Days Sports Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup includes three former winners – Hadleigh United, Stowmarket Town and Walsham-le-Willows.

All three are away on Saturday – Hadleigh visit Trimley Red Devils, Stowmarket are away to Waveney and Walsham-le-Willows travel to Long Melford.

All six sides will be aiming to take a step closer to the final by joining Framlingham Town, 2-1 winners at Haughley United last weekend, in the final four.

It is also quarter-final time in the HomeStore Self Storage Suffolk Women’s Cup, with a Portman Road final appearance also in the sights of the competing teams.

Brantham Athletic will be bidding to bring an end to Ipswich Town’s domination of the competition – they have won the cup for the last four years in a row – when the two sides meet on Sunday.

Coplestonians host AFC Sudbury, last season’s runner-up, while two teams who re-formed this season – Woodbridge Town and Haverhill Rovers – meet each other.

Needham Market, newcomers to the competition this season, entertain East Bergholt United. Needham currently sit second in the Suffolk Girls’ & Women’s League and East Bergholt top the table.

The two Suffolk Sunday Cup Quarter-Final matches postponed a fortnight ago are rescheduled for this weekend.

Felixstowe Harpers host Gym United for the right to meet Borussia Martlesham, while Horringer Social Club meet Howards with the winners facing Tostock Pirates.

There are also 12 re-arranged quarter-final ties in the Crown Imperial Youth Cups – 11 boys’ and one girls’ match – plus the outstanding Suffolk Boys’ Under-18 Sunday Cup last-eight tie.
