Losing finalists go out on penalties

TWO ties in the Suffolk Senior Cup first round on Saturday were settled on penalties.

THE losing finalists in each of the last two seasons were knocked out of the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup on penalties on Saturday.

Bungay Town, who lost in last season’s final to Woodbridge Town, went out 4-1 on penalties at Beccles Town following a 3-3 draw. Beccles (white shirts) are pictured above scoring their first goal a minute after Bungay Town (red shirts) had taken the lead.

Crane Sports, the 2017 runners-up, bowed out 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Wanderers.

Achilles, who beat Cranes in that final, were 4-2 winners at home to Haughley United, the 2016 losing finalists.

Trimley Red Devils’ first match in the competition ended in disappointment, the Touchline SIL Senior Division side losing 3-1 at Thurlow Nunn League Division One side Cornard United.

The biggest win of the day in the 11 ties came at Victory Road where Leiston Reserves defeated fellow Thurlow Nunn League Division One opponents Felixstowe & Walton United 6-0.

The draw for the second round will be announced on BBC Radio Suffolk on Wednesday night from 7pm and before Ipswich Town’s match at Leeds United kicks-off at 7.45pm.

Ipswich Town were pushed all the way in the first round of the HomeStore Self Storage Suffolk Women’s Cup by Ipswich Wanderers, who led 1-0 until the 77th minute before two late goals put the holders through. Beccles Town were 5-2 winners at Walsham-le-Willows in the other tie.

The draw for the second round will be announced via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed at 12.30pm on Tuesday lunchtime.
