MILDENHALL Town’s pitch has been Highly Commended in The FA Groundsman of the Year Awards 2018.

The West Suffolk club were Highly Commended in the Isthmian League awards.

The FA Groundsman of the Year Awards 2018 – the 16th time they have taken place – are for clubs playing at Steps 1-6 of the non-league pyramid.

The 2017-18 season was Mildenhall’s first at Step 4 in Bostik League North, which is part of the Isthmian League.

Mildenhall Town Secretary Brian Hensby said: “We are very proud as a club to win this award.

“In fact, the three winning trophies all went to Isthmian Premier clubs (Step 3) and we effectively came fourth as Highly Commended, meaning that we were rated as the best Step 4 pitch in the Isthmian League.

“It was a privilege for the players to have such a true surface and it looked in pristine condition right to the end of the season.

“In fact the pitch looked so good that, as he walked through the gate early in the season, one player from a visiting London-based team was heard to say ‘Cor, 4G isn’t?’”

The award was presented at St George’s Park by West Morland FA Chief Executive Peter Ducksbury to Steven Curtis, who took over as groundsman in November 2015, before leaving at the end of last season to join King’s Lynn Town.

Brian added: “We have tendered out the work currently to Luke Hamill Landscaping. Luke is a local lad and club member and is doing a good job.”
