Borough edge home in Senior Cup clash

HAVERHILL Borough won a thrilling tie against Capel Plough in the Suffolk Senior Cup.

HAVERHILL Borough edged a nine-goal thriller against Capel Plough to reach the quarter-finals of this season’s CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup.

A topsy-turvy second round tie at The New Croft on Saturday saw Borough take a two-goal lead, only for Capel to turn the match on its head and lead 3-2 at half time.

Borough scored three times in the second period before Sean Gunn completed his hat-trick for the visitors, although to no avail.

Borough, like Capel losing semi-finalists in 2017, will now wait to see who they will meet in this season’s quarter-finals. The remaining seven ties take place this coming weekend.

Stowmarket Town served notice of their intention on Saturday to reach a third successive Days Sports Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup Final. They won 8-2 at Cornard United.

Touchline SIL League B leaders Haughley United pulled off a fine 3-1 win over Whitton United of the Thurlow Nunn Reserve League.

SIL League A side Trimley Red Devils also enjoyed a good win, beating Bungay Town 6-1 and Waveney were 5-1 winners at home to Lakenheath.

Striker Shane Murphy is pictured above completing his hat-trick for Hadleigh United (red shirts) in their 3-2 win at Westerfield United (blue shirts) on Saturday.

Fusilier again displayed their firepower with a 9-1 victory over Taverners in the third round of the Anglian Radio Kids’ Trust Suffolk Sunday Shield.

The Lowestoft-based side found the net 13 times at Carlton Colville Town in the first round, before receiving a walkover win in round two.

That ten-goal aggregate was matched by Elmsett United’s 6-4 victory over Wetherden and Holbrook Swan’s win by the same margin against Sizewell Argyle.

Lavenham, runners-up in the Suffolk Sunday Trophy in 2017, were 5-0 winners at Eastbury Eagles in Sunday’s third round.

Haverhill & Hove Albion also netted five times, hosts Breda scoring a lone reply, while holders Bardwell Sports beat Thurston 4-0 to book their place in this season’s quarter-finals.
