Last-four losers in Senior Cup clash

THE losing semi-finalists two seasons ago meet in the Suffolk Senior Cup on Saturday.

THE losing semi-finalists two seasons ago meet in the first of this season’s CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup second-round ties on Saturday.

Haverhill Borough host Capel Plough at The New Croft with both clubs having ambitions to go a step further than they did in 2017.

Capel Plough lost 2-0 to eventual winners Achilles at Needham Market FC. The two teams are pictured above with Capel Plough (blue shirts) and Achilles (red & black striped shirts) walking out onto the pitch at Bloomfields before the start.

Haverhill Borough lost 4-1 to Crane Sports in the second semi-final at The Millfield, home of Hadleigh United FC in a match which was replayed after the original tie was abandoned due to player injuries.

That was a bitter pill to swallow for Borough, who were riding high in Division One of the Thurlow Nunn League and were promoted to the Premier Division that season.

Capel Plough have made a strong start to the season and currently lead the Senior Division of the SIL, although they lost their unbeaten tag when beaten 3-1 by East Bergholt United last Saturday.

However, they will have their work cut out if they are to progress past Borough, even though they are languishing in 15th place in the league at present.

Saturday also sees six ties taking place in the second round of the Days Sports Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup.

Framlingham Town are already safely through after defeating Capel Plough 8-1 last Saturday as are Walsham-le-Willows, who won a penalty shoot-out 3-0 against Coplestonians following a 1-1 draw the previous weekend.

Stowmarket Town, the 2016 winners and losing finalists to Felixstowe & Walton United last season, travel across the county to face Cornard United.

There are 16 thirds round ties scheduled for Sunday – eight each in the Anglian Radio Kids’ Trust Suffolk Sunday Shield and in the Suffolk Sunday Trophy.
