Walsham complete notable cup double
WALSHAM-le-Willows completed a notable double at the Crown Imperial Youth Cup Finals Day.
They won both this season’s Suffolk FA Boys’ Under-14 and Under-16 competitions in the nine finals hosted by Whitton United FC on Sunday.
Walsham defeated AFC Sudbury 3-2 in the Under-14 final and Needham Market by the only goal of the game in the Under-16 final.
AFC Sudbury did taste success in two competitions, winning both the Boys Under-13 final and the Boys’ Under-15 Minor Cup Final.
Ipswich Town caretaker manager Bryan Klug, whose son Jonny coaches AFC Sudbury, was among the spectators at the Under-13 final which saw AFC Sudbury beat Bury Town 12-1.
Colchester United manager John McGreal was also present to see son Max playing for Woodbridge Town in the Boys’ Under-18 final, but they lost 3-1 to Ipswich Wanderers for whom George Ablitt netted a hat-trick.
Top individual goalscorer of the day was Hannah Cobbold, who netted five times as Stowupland Falcons, managed by ex-Ipswich Town midfielder Gavin Johnson, won 7-4 against AFC Kesgrave.
This was the first year that there was no extra-time in any county cup competitions, with only one of Sunday's finals going to a penalty shoot-out.
Suffolk FA County Cup Competitions Manager Adrian Moye said: “We have had an excellent day with some unexpected results, and Maxine Barnes and her crew here at Whitton United have, as expected, done a tremendous job in hosting the finals.”
The cups and medals were presented by Rob Taylor, Sales Director of Crown Imperial, who have this season sponsored the Youth cup competitions.
