Mellis have point to prove in cup final

MELLIS have a point to prove in this weekend’s Suffolk Sunday Cup Final.

They face Kitchener Taverners from the Ipswich Sunday Football League in the final at Bloomfields, home of Needham Market FC, kick-off 10.30am.

Mellis, who play in the Bury & District Sunday League side, have reached the final three times before – and lost them all!

They lost 1-0 in a replay to Ipswich side St Clements following a 1-1 in the 1998-99 season, and then 1-0 to Bardwell Wasps in the 2003-04 season.

Mellis suffered penalty heartache in last season’s final, losing 7-6 to Ipswich Sunday Football League opponents AFC Chelmondiston following a 3-3 draw at Colchester United FC. Mellis players are pictured above celebrating one of their goals in the final.

They reached this season’s final courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Bungay Town at Woodbridge Town FC, while Kitchener Taverners won a penalty shoot-out 4-3 against Gym United after a 2-2 draw at AFC Sudbury.

That semi-final success for Kitchener Taverners was no mean feat considering Gym United reached the final of this season’s FA Sunday Cup, losing 2-0 to the holders Hardwick Social in the final a week ago.

Kitchener Taverners lifted the cup in the 1975-76 season thanks to a 1-0 win against Bloomfield Engineering, but were beaten 6-4 by Gym United in the 2013-14 final.

Admission to Sunday’s final is £4 for adults and £2 for concessions which applies to OAPS and children aged under-16.

Pre-school children accompanied by an adult will be admitted for £1.
