Something has got to give in cup tie

SOMETHING has got to give in Wednesday’s first semi-final of the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup.

SOMETHING has got to give in Wednesday’s first semi-final of the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup.

Holders Achilles, who have won their last eight games, face a Woodbridge Town side who have won ten and drawn one of their most recent 11 fixtures.

Achilles sit top of the Senior Division of the Touchline SIL and are on course to claim the title following their 4-1 victory over Felixstowe Harpers United which has left them 11 points clear with just seven matches remaining.

After Saturday’s 1-0 win away to Braintree Town Reserves, Woodbridge lead Division One of the Thurlow Nunn League by nine points and have nine games to play.

So although nothing is cut and dried, both teams are well-placed to win their respective leagues this season.

Adding the Senior Cup and thereby doing the double would be the icing on the cake for either club.

However, only one team is going to have that possibility still open to them following Wednesday evening’s semi-final at Felixstowe & Walton United FC, kick-off 7.45pm.

The two clubs were originally scheduled to meet 19 days ago at the same venue until heavy rain in the hours prior to kick-off caused the tie to be postponed.

Since then Achilles have played just the once, while Woodbridge have reeled off three consecutive victories without conceding a goal.

Woodbridge’s defence will have to be at their best if they are to stop an Achilles attack who have plundered 39 goals during that run of eight straight successes.

It promises to be quite a match – indeed one worthy of the final at Portman Road itself – and a healthy-sized crowd is anticipated.

The winners will have to wait and see who their opponents will be in mid-May as only Bungay Town are confirmed as being in their other semi-final.

Confirmation of their opponents has been delayed due to an ongoing disciplinary procedure concerning the quarter-final tie involving Leiston Reserves and Brantham Athletic Reserves.

Admission to the Goldstar Ground on Wednesday is £5 for adults and £3 for OAPS and children under the age of 16.

A souvenir programme, priced just £1, will also be on sale.

Wednesday night also sees the first of this season’s Days Sports Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup Semi-Finals take place.

Holders Stowmarket Town Reserves play Whitton United Reserves at Ipswich Wanderers for a place in the final against either Felixstowe & Walton United Reserves or Haverhill Rovers Reserves.

Their semi-final is now scheduled for this Saturday at Ransomes Sports Ground in Ipswich.
