Jim began refereeing in October 1963 when his team manager suggested he may be better to try refereeing! He progressed to become the equivalent of a current 2A Referee as well as an assistant on the Football League, running the line in Division One which is now the equivalent of the Premier League. Jim came off the list in 1990 when he reached the retirement age which was still in effect at the time. He then took over running the Southern League Assessment Scheme from 1991 until 2001 when he set up the Contributory Leagues Assessment Scheme for The Football Association.
