Injury-time defeat will be motivation
AFC Sudbury manager Marc Abbott said there will be no need for a team talk to motivate his players ahead of their Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup Semi-Final.
The Yellows meet Leiston for a place in this season’s final at the Martello Ground, home of Felixstowe & Walton United FC, on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45pm.
AFC Sudbury will be attempting to reach their first final since winning the competition for a third season in a row in the 2003-04 campaign.
Their last semi-final appearance came back in the 2014-15 season when they lost 3-2 to Whitton United after extra time.
Standing in their way this time will be a Leiston side who won 2-1 at AFC Sudbury on Saturday in the Southern League Premier Central thanks to an injury-time Kyran Clements winner.
Abbott, whose side had chances to win the match and lift themselves out of the relegation zone before Leiston’s late winner, said afterwards: “Leiston are a good side.
“They looked to come here and dominate and there are not many sides we have had to give up the ball to this year. They made us defend deeper and have some match-winners and good players at the top end of the pitch.
“We know it will be another tough game, but there is no need for a team talk on Tuesday after what we have experienced today. I think that has got to be a key motivation and enthuse the players to turn up on Tuesday and try to get us through to a final.”
As to whether AFC Sudbury will make changes to their starting XI, Abbott said: “We have respected this competition from the first round we were in, and we will continue to respect this competition.
“Of course, we have picked up a couple of niggles that we will have to assess, but our intention will be to go there and try and try to get through to the final.
“We know the task ahead and that it will be tough, but we want to get to the final and if we manage to do that it will give the supporters the lift that they need, and also history-wise it veers the club back towards some success in the competition moving forward.
“Hopefully we can have a big following there and give the supporters something to celebrate and look forward to the final in April.”
