Senior Cup proving very competitive
THIS season’s CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup is proving as competitive as ever!
Following on from three lower league sides knocking out higher league opposition in midweek, the first-round ties played over the weekend saw some more eye-catching results.
Macrons SIL Senior Division side Stowupland Falcons won 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at newcomers Kings Park Rangers, leaders of the Essex & Suffolk Border League Premier Division.
Bungay Town of the Fosters Solicitors Anglian Combinations League beat Thurlow Nunn League Division One North Needham Market Reserves 3-1 on spot kicks after they had played out a goalless draw.
Haverhill Rovers, currently second in Thurlow Nunn League Division One North, fell at the first hurdle on Friday night, losing 3-1 at Sudbury Sports, who are eighth in the Border League Premier Division.
Holders Trimley Red Devils progressed 2-0 at home against newcomers Bacton United 89, but the third side playing their first match in the competition, Mutford & Wrentham, scored a last-gasp winner in a 3-2 victory at Leiston St Margarets. Holders Ransomes Sports eased through to round two of this season’s Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup with a 10-0 victory over AFC Hoxne Reserves, while previous winners Woodbridge Town defeated Oulton United 3-1.
AFC Kesgrave scored six and Waveney ETC five in their wins at Hadleigh United and Corton & Carlton Colville respectively.
In the new Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Shield, Martlesham Old Boys netted ten times, Ransomes Sports Reserves eight, Old Newton United seven and Bury Town Reserves, Framlingham Town and Waveney Athletic, who won 5-4 at Ipswich Park, all scored five.
County cup action continues on Tuesday evening with two ties in this season’s Endeavour Automotive Suffolk Premier Cup and one in the Portable Space Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup.
Stowmarket Town host an Ipswich Town XI in a first-round tie, while Walsham-le-Willows will be aiming to upset higher-league AFC Sudbury in their second-round match in the Suffolk Premier Cup.
The first of this season's Senior Reserve Cup ties sees Brantham Athletic U23s host Coplestonians Reserves.
