Gipping Gnats cause upset in Junior Cup

FOUR more sides are through to the Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup Quarter-Finals.

FOUR more sides are through to the quarter-finals of this season’s Parkers Pitches Suffolk Junior Cup.

The losing finalists in each of the last two seasons in the McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup experienced differing fortunes in Saturday’s third-round ties.

Gateway 14 SIL Division Two side Gipping Gnats, runners-up in the 2022-23 season, caused an upset when they knocked out Division One visitors Kesgrave Kestrels 2-1.

Last season’s losing finalists Cavendish, currently bottom of Essex & Suffolk Border League Division One, went down 2-0 at SIL Division One side Stanton.

Somersham, also of SIL Division One, proved too strong for Lowestoft & District League Division One side Normanston Magpies, scoring eight times without reply. Somersham's Jack Newman (red & black striped shirt) is pictured above curling home a goal against Normanston Magpies (black & white striped shirts) on Saturday.

Capel Plough were 5-0 winners at fellow SIL Division One side Wenhaston United.

Capel Plough, Gipping Gnats, Somersham and Stanton join Ipswich Wanderers Development as confirmed quarter-finalists in the draw which will take place later this week.

The three other ties were all postponed due to the weather conditions and will be rescheduled.

Holders Ransomes Sports will entertain Woodbridge Town in the quarter-finals of this season’s Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup.

Ransomes Sports’ opponents Foxhall Town were unable to raise a side, meaning last season’s champions will now face the 2023 winners.
