Away sides dominate in county cup games

SIX of the weekend’s eight county cup quarter-finals were won by the away sides.

Three of the four McDonald’s Suffolk Primary Cup tie and the same number of Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup ties saw the visitors emerge victorious.

The only home team to win in the last eight of the Suffolk Primary Cup on Saturday were Wickham Market Reserves, who won 4-2 against Great Blakenham Chequers.

Bardwell Sports scored the only goal of the game to edge their game at Gipping Gnats, while Framlingham Town ‘A’ were 4-2 winners at Hope Church.

The semi-final line-up is completed by Kesgrave Kestrels, who won 3-2 at Lakenheath Casuals, meaning all four remaining sides are from the Macron SIL.

The draw for the semi-finals will be broadcast simultaneously on BBC Radio Suffolk and the Suffolk FA Twitter feed from 8.30pm on Thursday night.

A fourth successive final between Whitton United and Woodbridge Town remains a possibility in this season’s Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup.

Holders Whitton ran out 5-0 winners at Occold, while Woodbridge put out Capel Plough 2-1.

Walsham-le-Willows also won away from home – 3-2 at Coplestonians – meaning Lowestoft Town, who saw off AFC Kesgrave 3-1, were the only home team to go through.

The draw for the semi-finals will be broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk during the Non-League Hour on Thursday from 8.30pm as well as via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed.

AFC Claydon became the first side to reach a county cup final this season when they defeated Thurston 1-0 in the semi-final of the Suffolk Sunday Trophy.

They will have to wait a fortnight to see who their opponents will be as Bacton United 89 and Chantry Phoenix meet in the other semi-final on Sunday, March 20th.

County cup action continues this week with the two remaining, twice postponed second-round ties in the Turners Hyundai Suffolk Premier Cup - Bury Town face Felixstowe & Walton United on Tuesday evening and Haverhill Rovers welcome Woodbridge Town on Wednesday.
