Suffolk FA Statement – Martin Chapple

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Martin Chapple, aged 71 from Rougham.

Martin was a founding member of Sporting 87 Football Club in 1987 and the club’s first ever manager for two years within the Bury and District League before taking up refereeing in May 1989.

Most recently, Martin was a Referee Developer and would often be mentoring or observing referees within Suffolk. In May this year, Martin achieved the outstanding milestone of completing 100 Referee Observations and is pictured receiving recognition of this achievement.

In addition, Martin was also a committed organiser of the St. Nicholas Hospice Cup competitions which have raised valuable funds for charity.

Sporting 87 First Team Manager, Jonathan Warnock said, “This is such sad news - Martin has many friends within Sporting 87 and the local football community.

“The thoughts and prayers of us all connected with Sporting 87 are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

A minute’s silence will be observed before all games involving Sporting 87 this weekend as a mark of respect to Martin.

Suffolk FA Workforce Development Manager, Alan Dale said, “Martin was a lovely gentleman and his passion for refereeing and supporting others was to be admired.

Martin will be sorely missed and the thoughts and warmest wishes of all at Suffolk FA are with his family and friends.”
