Junior Cup Final Mutford Wrentham Stow Falcons May 2021 1

Lockwood leaves it late for Falcons

CRAIG Lockwood scored a late winner as Stowupland Falcons lifted the Suffolk Junior Cup.

CRAIG Lockwood scored a 92nd minute winner as Stowupland Falcons lifted the Total Football Suffolk Junior Cup.

Lockwood headed home following a long throw from the right to give Stowupland a 2-1 win against Mutford & Wrentham at The New Croft in Haverhill on Monday.

The goal gave Stowupland their first win in this competition – and simultaneously left Mutford & Wrentham, also playing in their first final, tasting defeat.

The first-half saw in the way of little goalmouth action, with Stowupland striker Craig Simpson heading just wide of the far post after 20 minutes.

Mutford broke the deadlock seven minutes later when Jordan Gissing sent a low 20-yard free-kick past the wall and into the bottom corner of the net.

Stowupland, who play in Division One of the Macron SIL, equalised a minute into time added on at the end of the opening period when Blake Richards broke forward and his cross-shot was met by Ryan Rampley who forced it home at the far post.

Mutford started the second half on the front foot, Ryan Davies volleying a left-wing cross over the crossbar and then Harley Thompson seeing his dipping effort turned over by keeper Dale Watling.

Jarred Blake sent his header straight at Watling after 70 minutes and Chris Healey did likewise seven minutes later, before the keeper again denied Davies to further frustrate the Anglian Combination Division Four outfit.

Just as the final looked as though it would be settled in a penalty shoot-out, Lockwood sent a header into the bottom far corner of the net to spark joyous Stowupland celebrations.

Nigel Woollard represented competition sponsors Total Football at the presentation ceremony.
