Twenty-two teams up for the Senior Cup

TWENTY-TWO teams’ dreams of Suffolk Senior Cup success are on the line this weekend.

TWENTY-TWO teams’ dreams of tasting success in this season’s CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup are on the line this weekend.

One first-round fixture and ten second-round ties are taking place, starting on Friday evening when Sudbury Sports host Benhall St Mary.

It will be Sudbury Sports’ first foray into the competition, after competing in last season’s Total Football Suffolk Junior Cup, which saw them reach the delayed final before losing 6-4 to Halesworth Town last month.

Coplestonians travel to Haverhill Borough on Saturday in the remaining first-round tie, which was delayed due to the Ipswich side’s participation in the heldover 2019-20 final.

After reaching their first-ever final, Coplestonians will be aiming to emulate that feat, but must overcome higher-league opposition if they are to progress to the second round.

Leiston Reserves did so on Wednesday evening, defeating Needham Market Reserves 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in their rescheduled first-round match.

A quick turnaround sees Leiston now head to Trimley Red Devils, who have enjoyed a good start to this season in the Macron SIL Senior Division.

Achilles, who welcome Framlingham Town, East Bergholt United, who travel to Debenham LC, and Henley Athletic, who have home advantage against Cornard United, will be flying the flag for the SIL against Thurlow Nunn League Division One opposition.

There are four all-SIL ties while Anglian Combination Premier Division rivals Beccles Town and Waveney clash in north Suffolk.

Bungay Town, the 2017-18 runners-up, were 3-1 winners at fellow Anglian Combination Division One side Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves in midweek to become the fourth side to book their place in the third-round draw.

They join AFC Sudbury Reserves, whose opponents Ipswich Town Under-18s have withdrawn from this season’s competition, Lakenheath and Ransomes Sports.

The third-round draw will take place via the Suffolk FA Twitter feed at 12.30pm on Tuesday lunchtime.

There are three more county cups matches scheduled for Sunday, two of them in the first round of the HomeStore Self Storage Suffolk Women’s Cup.

The two sides that met in the delayed 2019-20 final are both in action, with runners-up Brett Vale hosting AFC Kesgrave and holders Ipswich Town entertaining Kesgrave Kestrels.

Action is pictured above from the delayed 2019-20 final between Ipswich Town (maroon shirts) and Brett Vale (dark blue & light blue shirts) at Needham Market FC.

The Suffolk Police versus Aldeburgh Town first round tie in the newly-named Best Badges Suffolk Veterans’ Cup is due to be replayed after the original tie was abandoned due to a player injury.
