County cups return with goals galore

THE Suffolk county cups are under way for the 2019-20 season.

THE Suffolk county cups are under way for the 2019-20 season – and five more competitions start this weekend.

Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves defeated Haughley United 1-0 in the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup First Round in the opening match of the county cups campaign last Saturday.

The nine ties in the Suffolk Boys’ Under-18 Midweek Cup this week saw a total of 50 goals, with newcomers Ipswich Town Under-16s scoring 11 and Stowmarket Town nine.

Holders AFC Sudbury edged past Walsham-le-Willows, last season’s runners-up, while two teams – Haverhill Rovers and Cornard United both progressed after penalty shoot-outs.

Saturday sees one tie in this season’s Days Sports Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup as Framlingham Town Reserves host Old Newton Utd Reserves.

First round matches are scheduled in four different competitions on Sunday – the Suffolk Sunday Cup, Shield and Trophy and the Homestore Self Storage Suffolk Women’s Cup.

There are just two ties in the Suffolk Sunday Cup, with five scheduled in the Shield and 12 in the Trophy.

The second-round draws will be announced live on the Suffolk FA Twitter feed next week as follows – Suffolk Sunday Cup on Tuesday, Suffolk Sunday Shield on Wednesday and Suffolk Sunday Trophy on Thursday.

There are five ties in the Homestore Self Storage Suffolk Women’s Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The pick of the ties sees holders Ipswich Town host AFC Sudbury, the team they defeated in both the 2015 and 2018 finals.

Needham Market, the team Ipswich beat in last season’s final, start their quest to emulate that feat at home to Woodbridge Town.

The draw for the second round will be broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk on the afternoon of Saturday, September 28th.
