Sunday Cup Final 2016 1

Cup semi-finals start on Sunday

THE first of this season’s county cup semi-finals take place this weekend.

THE first of this season’s Suffolk FA county cup semi-finals are scheduled for this weekend.

The two semi-finals in the Suffolk Sunday Cup kick-off this season’s last-four ties on the same day as some of the remaining quarter-final matches in other adult and Youth competitions.

Ipswich Sunday Football League side Borussia Martlesham will be bidding to reach their first Sunday Cup Final when they meet Gym United at Stowmarket Town FC.

Borussia Martlesham have scored ten times in their two ties so far, while their Bury & District Sunday League opponents, who of course were runners-up in last season’s national FA Sunday Cup, have netted nine without reply.

Bury Town FC are hosting the other semi-final – the all BDSL match between Tostock Pirates and Horringer Social Club. Horringer SC will also be aiming to reach a first-ever Suffolk Sunday Cup Final at the expense of the 2016 winners. Tostock Pirates are pictured above after defeating AFC Chelmondiston 2-1 in the 2016 Final at Woodbridge Town FC.

Sunday also sees the four quarter-finals taking place in this season’s Suffolk Veterans’ Cup.

Capel Plough, the 2013 runners-up, host AFC Hoxne, last year’s losing finalists, while ETC Lowestoft and Westbourne Warriors will both be looking to move to within 90 minutes of a first final appearance.

Walsham-le-Willows, who booked their berth in the last eight courtesy of an epic 10-9 penalty shoot-out victory over Barham Athletic following a goalless draw, entertain holders Woodbridge Town.

The remaining tie pits Whitton United, who put ten unanswered goals past Taydal in the last round, against Coplestonians, whose only outing in this season’s competition so far resulted in a 3-2 win versus Spexhall Huntsman & Hounds in round two.

The outstanding two quarter-final ties in the Crown Imperial Girls’ Cups – one in the Under-12 competition and the other in the Under-16 competition – are also on Sunday.
