Terrific cup win for East Bergholt

KIRKLEY & Pakefield Reserves were the big winners in the Suffolk Senior Cup on Saturday.

KIRKLEY & Pakefield Reserves were the big winners in the CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup on Saturday.

The Anglian Combination League Division One side won 8-1 at home to Touchline SIL Senior Division visitors Wenhaston United in their first-round tie.

Another SIL side, East Bergholt United, pulled off a terrific 3-2 win at higher-league AFC Sudbury Reserves to book their place in round two of this season’s competition.

They will be joined by Debenham LC, who like AFC Sudbury Reserves play in Division One of the Thurlow Nunn League. Debenham LC won 2-0 at last season’s losing semi-finalists Brantham Athletic Reserves. The remaining 11 first-round ties are scheduled for this coming Saturday, and the second-round draw will take place the following week

Holders Kitchener Taverners needed penalties to reach the third round of this season’s Suffolk Sunday Cup.

Their match at fellow Ipswich Sunday Football League side AFC Bergholt ended goalless, with Taverners winning the subsequent penalty shoot-out 4-3.

Horringer Social Club had their shooting boots on as they beat Brandon Town Community 7-2, while 2016 winners Tostock Pirates hit six past Portman Rovers.

Felixstowe Harpers and Mellis, runners-up in each of the last two seasons, both scored five as they beat Bury Bowl and Leiston Orient respectively.

An extraordinary penalty shoot-out was required to decide the winners of one of the second-round ties in this season’s Anglian Radio Kids’ Trust Suffolk Sunday Shield.

Pauls Athletic and Wetherden drew 3-3, but it was Wetherden who progressed to round three after winning 10-9 on penalties!

Amboed United, meanwhile, found the net ten times during normal time, defeating Laxfield United 10-2.

Two ties in the Suffolk Sunday Shield second round were settled by penalty shoot-outs.

Wickham Wanderers won 6-5 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Stowmarket United, while Stoke by Clare were 3-1 winners in a shoot-out after a goalless draw at home to Belchamp.

Holders Bardwell Sports won 2-1 at home to Playford Reserves, while Monarchs, who they defeated in last season’s final, won 7-0 at Phoenix.

The draws for all three Sunday cup competitions will be made later this week.
