Shhhhh........Silent Weekend is back

FOLLOWING the success of the initiative, Suffolk FA’s Silent Weekend returns for its fourth season across the weekend February 24th and 25th 2018.

The campaign emphasises the importance of letting players play and creating a positive match-day environment, as well as giving the players a chance to explore the game and develop their own outcomes.

The event, once again sponsored by Total Football, has been well supported by Suffolk’s clubs and leagues in previous years, and has become a staple of the grassroots football calendar each season.

Last season, over 500 of Suffolk’s grassroots teams signed up to take part, from Under-7s all the way up to adults. The weekend again has the support and backing of the Ipswich & Suffolk Youth League, Suffolk Youth League, Suffolk Girls’ & Women’s League, Suffolk FA WAYS, Norfolk & Suffolk Youth League and Suffolk FA Monday Night Football league.

The events will take place over the weekend are:

  • U7 4v4 Festival at Brantham Athletic
  • 4v4 Girls Festival at Felixstowe & Walton United FC
  • SIL Ability Counts League – FA People’s Cup Competition at Goals Ipswich
  • Various Suffolk County Cup Fixtures across the County

During the weekend, Suffolk FA would like individuals to promote the following:

  • All Suffolk clubs are encouraged to promote and participate in the campaign
  • Where possible, a Suffolk FA Ambassador to be visible at a number of venues across Suffolk
  • All adults to refrain from any shouting or direct communication with players
  • Applause for both teams
  • Parents to refrain from ‘advising’ coaches
  • Coaches to give minimal instructions to players
  • Players encouraged to take their own teams talks and make their own decisions
  • Parents/coaches to refrain from ‘advising’ or questioning referees
  • Technical areas and RESPECT barriers (lines) in place
  • Suffolk FA 11v11 Adult Monday Night Football will be signed up

Jodie Allard, Football Development Manager at Suffolk FA said: “Silent Weekend has gone from strength-to-strength since its inception three seasons ago. The weekend aims to promote positive match-day environments and we are always overwhelmed by the support from our clubs and leagues in promoting this key message through the initiative.

“The weekend encourages parents and coaches to empower players to play football in a positive and inclusive environment, where they can decide their own outcomes and tactics and receive plenty of positive encouragement in return.

“For clubs who are new to the programme, it’s a fantastic opportunity to set the standards of what you expect a good match environment to look like, with Respect being given from all coaches, players, parents and spectators.”

“The Suffolk FA team are looking forward to getting to matches across Suffolk to see these values in practice and celebrate the fantastic work being done to support grassroots football in the county.”
