Big Night For Long Melford In Premier Cup

IT WILL be a big night for Long Melford in the Omni Freight Services Suffolk Premier Cup on Wednesday evening.

The Villagers host Ipswich Town at their Stoneylands ground (pictured above) in the first match to be played in this season’s competition, kick-off 7.45pm.

Neighbours AFC Sudbury were due to host Haverhill Borough on Tuesday evening, but the tie was postponed due to AFC Sudbury’s involvement in an FA Trophy replay at Aylesbury United on Wednesday, after the two sides drew 2-2 in Suffolk on Saturday.

That tie has now been rescheduled to take place at the King’s Marsh Stadium on Tuesday, October 24th, kick-off 7.45pm.

Therefore, the spotlight falls on Long Melford, who will be playing only their third fixture in the Suffolk Premier Cup in recent seasons.

Following their promotion for the first time in their history, Long Melford played in the competition in the 2015-16 as a Step 5 club for the first time, bowing out 3-2 at Walsham-le-Willows in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round.

They then lost 4-0 at home to another fellow Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division outfit in Felixstowe & Walton United in last season’s first round.

Long Melford will therefore be bidding to win their first Suffolk Premier Cup tie against what is expected to be a youthful Ipswich Town side.

The Villagers currently sit in 22nd position in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division – three places off the bottom of the table – with eight points following two wins and two draws in their opening 12 matches.

Long Melford are managed by former player Jamie Bradbury, who was first-team coach last season and replaced Jules Mumford in June following the latter’s resignation.
