Stowmarket Players Up For Premier Cup

STOWMARKET Town Manager Rick Andrews says his players will be up for Tuesday’s Omni Freight Services Suffolk Premier Cup tie at Felixstowe & Walton United.

Andrews (pictured above) takes his side to the Goldstar Ground for the second round tie which pits the leaders of the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division against the second-placed side.

The Seasiders sit top of the table, 15 points clear of Stowmarket, after losing just one and winning 19 of their 20 league fixtures so far.

However, the visitors also enter the tie in a rich vein of form, after collecting 35 points out of a possible 39 from their last 13 league fixtures following Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Haverhill Rovers.

Striker Josh Mayhew netted his 29th goal of the campaign five minutes from time to make it nine straight league wins for Stowmarket.

The two teams met on the opening day of the season at the same venue, with Felixstowe fighting back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 against last season’s Division One champions.

Andrews said: “We had a great game against them last time when we were 3-1 up with 20 minutes to go and we should have seen the game out.

“I wouldn’t say we deserved to be 3-1 up, but we had taken our chances and they had not taken theirs.

“They then came back strongly and we crumbled as they scored three times and won 4-3.

“Hopefully it will be a decent game on Tuesday – the players will certainly be up for it, although I was hoping to draw Leiston, Needham Market or Bury Town, so we could see where we are at as a team.

“We will go out to enjoy it – it is a break from the league and will be our last Tuesday night game for a while as we will be just playing every Saturday.”

Tuesday night’s ties also see Hadleigh United entertain Ipswich Town, and AFC Sudbury Manager Mark Morsley face his former club Needham Market, who are the holders.

The following evening Ipswich Wanderers host Haverhill Rovers and Walsham-le-Willows are at home to Brantham Athletic in two all-Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division ties.
